ODSG backs lawmakers’ plan to review laws in south-west

The Ondo State Government says it supports a plan by Houses of Assembly in the south West to review the legislative procedure, rules and standing orders.

The government described the plan as apt and timely.

Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, represented by the Deputy Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, stated this while playing host to members of the south-west Legislative Reform Implementation Committee and Majority Leaders of the House of Assembly, Friday in Akure.

According to Akeredolu, a review of the legislative procedure is needed at this most crucial period.

He said that the importance of collaboration by state majority leaders in the south-west region was to foster cross-fertilisation of ideas and innovation, adding as no one was an island.

He thanked the Houses of Assembly in the region for the smooth passage of the southwest security network bill.

The bill gave legal teeth to the regional security outfit, Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN) code-named Amotekun.

Amotekun, (a Yoruba word for Leopard) is now operating in Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Ogun and Lagos.

The governor added that with their support, the operation of WNSN has taken off effectively in the various states.

He said that this has further enhanced the security of lives and properties in the member states.

Akeredolu noted that the full cooperation enjoyed by the Ondo Government from the State House of Assembly in all matters “has made governance easier in the state’’.

“There is the need to do things differently as societies constantly evolve. Some of our laws need to be reviewed in due course. There is no society that is static and the evolution of society brings about new challenges.

“Things have to be done in different ways; that is why our laws have to be reviewed to meet up with the challenges of the time,’’ he said.

Mr Agunbiade Sanai, Chairman of South-West Houses of Assembly Majority Leaders Forum, call on legislators to collaborate for a robust interaction to fashion out ways to achieve a review of the laws.
